The photograph shows the war memorial located on the village green in Murton, it is a replica of the

Sgt William McNally No 13820 8th Yorkshire Regiment

The following are copies of the reports for the various military awards.

No 13820 Private William McNally

When his officer was wounded during the assault of CONTALMAISON, on 10th July 1916, he
remained with him and tied him up under fire and subsequently reached the firing line by himself.
                                                                                          Military Medal, 20th July 1916
                                                                                          (Sgd.) H Wilson Lt.-Col

 A.A. & Q.M.G., 23rd Division

No 13820 Sergeant William McNally

The trench occupied by this N.C.O’s. platoon was heavily shelled. One shell burst among him
and his men killing one and wounding three. With complete disregard for danger he got the
remainder under cover and carried the wounded to safety. The following night at the same
place his trench was heavily shelled, and on three separate occasions he went to the rescue
of men who had been buried and brought them to safety,

The cool courage of this N.C.O. is worthy of the highest praise, and was a striking
example to all ranks.
Awarded Bar to the Military Medal
13th November 1917
                                                                                (
Sgd.) E.F. Falkner Lieut.-Colonel,

  A.A. & Q.M.G.

No 13820 Sergeant William McNally M.M.

During the operations on the 27th October, 1918, across the Piave, this N.C.O’s Company
was seriously hampered in its advance by heavy machine gun fire from near some buildings
on a flank. This N.C.O. with an entire disregard for his own personal safety, alone rushed
the machine gun post, killing the team with his pistol and capturing the gun.
Later at VAZZOLA, on the 29th October, Sergt. McNally’s Company having crossed
MONTICANO River, found an extremely heavy amount of Rifle and machine gun fire directed
upon them from a flank from a group of buildings. This N.C.O. immediately formed his platoon
into a position from whence they opened Lewis gun and rifle fire upon the buildings, he himself
meanwhile creeping to the rear of the enemy position. Realising the number of lives that would
be lost in a frontal attack he, unaided, rushed the position, killing or putting to flight the garrison
and capturing a machine gun. On the same day he was holding a newly captured ditch with
14 men when he was strongly counter attacked from both flanks. By his coolness and skill in
controlling the fire of his party, he frustrated the attack, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy.

Throughout the whole operations his innumerable acts of gallantry set a high ideal to his men,
and his conduct generally was beyond all praise.

In recognition of the foregoing HIS MAJESTY THE KING has been graciously pleased to
award Sergeant McNally THE VICTORIA CROSS.

(Sgd.) J. Gray Simpson, Major,
                                                                                    A. & Q. Branch of Staff.

Memorial of William McNally 1874-1976 V.C., M.M. & Bar Located Murton Village Green
adjacent the main War Memorial.

William McNally Plaque

The Main Plaque in the centre of William McNally's memorial.

Service Men and Women Killed in the First and Second World War.

The following tables are a list of the Service Men and Women from Murton who were killed in the First
and Second World Wars, the lists have been compiled from names that appear on the Murton War Memorial
(Cenotaph), the various plaques that are in the local churches, working men's clubs and the Miners Federation
Book of remembrance. The details have also been retrieved from the Commonwealth War Graves web site
and Soldiers died in the great war CD.

Some of the names may appear in the books or plaques around the village but not on the war memorial,
this is because of a number of reasons. If the individuals did not live in Murton but
a) worked at Murton Colliery b) attended one of the local churches or chapels c) worked in one of the
supporting industries or shops etc, then their colleagues may have requested their names appear on these
individual registers.

These lists are still being developed and populated with information
as we research them ourselves or are given information by others.
If you can provide us with any further information or photographs
of any of the servicemen or women, please Contact Us. Also if there
are any errors, please Contact Us and we will endeavour to make any
corrections as soon as possible.
