Human Cost of Coal

Colliery Pit Wheel

The photograph shows one of the pit wheels salvaged on the demolition of the Colliery. It is currently located at the top of Woods Terrace, on open ground adjacent to the former Murton Colliery site.

The wheel and the plaque are a monument to the human cost of mining coal, used to heat our homes and fuel the engines of industry and symbolises the dept of honour, that is owed by the nation to our mining communities.
